Acupuncture is an ancient art of healing that dates back over 5,000 years. It is one of the primary treatments used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Acupuncture promotes the body’s own natural healing power by regulating the flow of qi, the vital life force or energy that circulates throughout the body. When qi energy flows freely, the body achieves and maintains balance and wellbeing. When it stagnates, is blocked or out of balance, illness or some form of health problem often results.  Stress, fatigue, poor diet, injury, lack of exercise, and exposure to toxins — environmental, pharmaceutical and nutritional — are the most common interruptions to the body’s natural flow of energy and therefore threats to wellbeing.

TCM has mapped out the flow of qi in the body through a system called meridians or energy pathways. Each of the twelve primary meridians connects to a specific organ or group of organs that govern particular bodily functions. Acupuncture unblocks and stimulates the flow of energy. It does this with very fine sterilized, disposable needles that are gently inserted into specific points along the meridians, unleashing the body’s own power to heal itself. Traditional diagnosis includes an examination of the pulse and tongue, abdominal diagnosis, as well as other non-invasive evaluations. A typical treatment is calming and painless.

By restoring the body to its natural state of balance and vibrant, youthful health, Acupuncture promotes and enhances vitality and wellbeing—without drugs or surgery. In addition to Acupuncture treatment, a seasoned practitioner will often prescribe Chinese Herbs, recommend dietary changes, and suggest moderate exercise, relaxation techniques or other ways to achieve more balance in life.

Experience a Soothing State of Deep Relaxation

Once the Acupuncture needles are gently inserted, the lighting is softened and relaxing music is played. As the healing process begins, patients normally enter a soothing, restorative state of deep relaxation.  However, each patient is different. When the needles are inserted, some feel nothing, while others experience a slight, quick twinge, sometimes followed by tingling, numbness or warmth.

Unlike the hypodermic needles used for injections, Acupuncture needles are very thin and therefore cause very little, if any pain. Needles generally remain in place for 20-40 minutes. During a typical Acupuncture session, patients often describe a feeling of unique calm and relaxation. At the end of the session, the needles are removed. This is a painless process. Symptom relief may occur instantly or in the few days that follow. For complex or chronic issues, a series of treatments is often recommended.
